Right that's that one out of the way and onto the next event in March or April. Does anybody have any suggestions for the next event? Practice events are always a loose affair so we are talking about the main event.

Apologies to the guys who turned up on Friday night and were asked to camp at the finish line. The original plan was to run up to the finish line and slow down on the drag strip but we changed that. It sort of split the guys up. For sure we will al be in the same place next year.

Also I didn't have a trophy for all the classes and that was due to the sponsor pulling out. We need to all work hard in trying to find sponsorship next year. The best thing that could happen is that Nic beats the 163.51 and I have all year to work on a fast rocket car to beat him. This will be good publicity.

Lets not forget the 2 cell and 4 cell electric classes and also the small and big block IC classes. I would like to promote these for next year as I believe they could be closely fought battles.

Somebody was asking about tee shirts for this year. I will make some again but need pre orders and deposits as I was left with a few over in 2008, unless we can get a sponsor to print some up.

I really think we have broken out of the geek fest type event and could get main stream sponsors involved. This will mean a more formal event and people need to realise this. I liked this year as it was so friendly and no real organisational problems (apart from the plane landing in the middle of the event...LOL)

Lets have your suggestions.

Cheers

Collect the entry fee off people before they're allowed to use the runway, that'll stop the people who didn't pay and left after using the timing gear.

I think I caught most people. If we get sponsorship the event will be better organised

I think the key to sponsorship is getting schools and kids involved.  Such an event would make a very good DT project for school kids to work on formally as coursework or as an after school type project.  Once schools are involved, the event would be much more appealing to commercial sponsors I believe.  Look at the F1 in schools project for example, this is a pretty big deal but there's something a lot more exciting about radio control - you actually get to DRIVE the thing for a start.  I think it was originally started by Jaguar F1 - see http://www.f1inschools.co.uk/.
Then there is the Greenpower electric car event where teams have to enter a single seater race car powered by handout standard lead acid batteries and a standard motor and engineer the best package around that.  Teams from the company where I work have been entering that for a few years, but it is also open to school teams.  If it took off like either of these organisations, the RC speed event would be a MASSIVE deal.

My school does Greenpower.

Thing is that they don't make good GCSE/A Level projects. Too complicated for what you need.

Getting involved with schools is a complete nightmare. Anything proposed will automatically be rejected by the overworkerd teachers as being just extra work load. Anybody who comes within 10ft of a school kid has to have a police clearance check. Unless you are a big company and the trusts think there might be some money in it its a non starter.

Ultimately, it all comes down to "What's in it for the sponsor?". They'll want to know that their product or service will be associated with the best and fastest RC cars in Europe. More importantly, they'll want to know that the people doing the associating will put their hands in their pockets and spend money on that product or service. We've got 139 members. If each member can potentially spend £100 with whoever it is, that's £14 grand. I don't know how much the sponsorship would cost but, lets say it's £4,000. That's a very significant portion of whatever profit they stand to make on selling to us. So. Number 1. We need to increase the amount of traffic to this site and, ideally, the number of active members. That way, the cost of the event sponsorship will become a smaller proportion of the potential profit. Secondly, we need to attract a sponsor who's product or service is targetted at the people we attract. That's a tough one, as, almost by definition, our vehicles are one-off's, build either from scratch or from a multitude of manufacturers parts. Why does Schumacher sponsor Nic case? Well, in no particular order. 1: They think he's in with a good chance of getting a record. He's based his car on a current Schumacher kit and this associates the kit with all kinds of positive factors, potentially increasing sales of kits and spares. Schumacher know that the US market is very big. The more attention they get from the US RC fraternity, the more sales they'll get. There are all kinds of other factors but suffice it to be said, no company is today's economic climate will shell out money directly out of their profits unless they have a good ( and, ideally quantifiable ) chance of getting back some significant multiple of that money.

We could build up a picture of an ideal event sponsor. Maybe that's where we should start. Just talking straight off the hip, I'm thinking...

Maybe a Far-Eastern company that's keen to break into the European RC market.

Possibly a UK-based distributor

An up-and-coming 10th scale touring car manufacturer?

An online hobby shop?

A transmitter manufacturer - We all need one and it's an important link in the chain.

Perhaps some kind of link up with the Bloodhound SSC attempt. Tony's a World Champion and we should be able to leverage that fact to publicise Bloodhound SSC. No reason why the Bloodhound gang shouldn't suggest their sponsors make a small donation if we make our event/s part of the run-up to the BSSC attempt.

Also worth considering offering some kind of placement on our website as part of a complete sponsorship package.

Well, I hope I've given fuel for thought.

Cheerz,

Rootz

Nice post rootsman and makes perfect sence. Ben Jarvis and myself have already approached the Boodhound lot for a project that will be a 1/4 scale world land speed record attempt running on the black rock desert. We put a long and infor informative mail together explaining the idea in principle and outlining the benefits to the sport and also supporting the governments initiative on science and engineering.

All we got back was some standard reply email which only proved they never bothered to read it.

I like the idea of a far east company but they are targeting new markets with plenty of growth such as India, middle and far east. I am already intouch with a company in india trying to promote speed racing there. Its slow

All I am looking for is for a company with an advertising budget spending some of it on our event.

On 10th May 2010 there is a massive model exibition at Long Marston Airfield taking up the area from the drag strip finishing line to the cross runways on the right. I intend to be there is some way with the cars we run and try and promote the event in this way. Maybe something will come of it, who knows

Cheers
